Software as an instrument, not a toy

A toy rewards you for touching it. An instrument rewards you for learning it. The difference is whether the feedback is decoration or information.

I would rather ship a tool that feels austere on first contact and indispensable on the hundredth than one that delights once and frustrates forever.
